The Sears Wishbook and my childhood Christmases

The Sears Christmas Wishbook was one of the things I looked forward to most as a child. Its arrival was part of Christmas, before Christmas had actually arrived.

I spent hours turning the pages and circling the toys I hoped to find under the tree. The pictures were colourful, the possibilities seemed endless, and deciding what to circle was an activity in itself.

Online shopping is convenient, but it does not feel like waiting for that catalogue and then spending an afternoon with it. I don’t have my childhood Wishbook anymore. I do have the memory of how much anticipation it held.

It is funny how an ordinary catalogue can become part of your family memories. What I miss is not really the shopping. It is that particular kind of childhood excitement.
